The culture of music

Is music a universal language? Can all peoples of the world find comfort in the vast expanse that is music? And how is the internet going to influence the production and consumption of music?

The digital age has ushered in a new era of music that not only stretches the boundaries of what we call music, but also increases the availability of musical technology and software to the masses. Unlike the introduction of mass production to the music scene where instruments became widespread and pianos and guitars began to populate nearly every household in America, Digital Audio Workstations allow for the actual production and exportation of a completed work that very well could be a high quality song.

Does this change the face of who we consider to be talented or a good musician, or even that of our celebrities? Does the social aspect of music making begin to change with the inclusion of this technology? Will the connection between members exhibit a new kind of respect found in the music community?

My personal belief is that there will be a homogenization of world cultures via the close connectivity that the internet and technology provides us and with that merge will come a change in the interpretation of culture as a whole. How that will effect music in the mainstream and otherwise will only be able to be interpreted as time moves onward. It must be understood that now, as sound becomes more malleable, their will be a reciprocation impact on the world's culture to the extent that music may become a unifying force behind a cultural singularity.

If so, then music is universal, and humanity has much to look forward to.

Introduction 1

First and foremost, hello all! I am Wessley Hampton and a second semester freshman here at Virginia Tech. I am from Northern Virginia, Stafford specifically but my extended family lives almost solely in Florida.

Some interesting things to start with include the fact that I have been doing Issinryu Karate for more than ten years and was an all-star cheerleader for at-least 4 years until I came to Virginia Tech.

I am a Brony, a fan of the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which in and of itself has in many ways shaped my life for the better, giving me inspiration. It may sound cliche, but it in the year I have been a brony I have done the most I ever had In the creative atmospheres.

To start I am a mediocre artist, doing mostly digital portraits and landscapes and musician, both in performing terms on the piano, singing (learning), violin and in composition terms making everything from ambient to techno. I have had the chance to put three songs of mine into internet charity albums which collectively have earned thousands for Your Siblings , not that my songs were that great. That leads me into my fifteen minutes of fame.

The charity album Faithful and Strong found below, was seen by thousands and I had the opportunity to be beside my personal musical idols in which case I may or may not have freaked out. Since then I have had the chance to chat with some of them over skype and learn from people who have been mixing, mastering and producing for years more than I have.

This class I hope will help me communicate quickly and effectively via any textual medium. I personally have had ideas for stories I would like to write, but have never had the ability or discipline to truly wright them.

That about sums things up then!

  Have a good day,

~ Wessley Hampton
